Time Will Tell

May 14, 2013 — Leave a comment

There’s a lot to be said about procrastination and whether it’s bad.  Personally I don’t believe we procrastinate to intentionally hurt ourselves.  In our right minds we are always looking to gain and benefit.  At worse procrastination is a focus issue that can be solved.

We procrastinate because we need a little more pressure applied to perform at our best.  We need urgency.  This is a good thing but also a telling one.  If you want to know how bad you really want something look at how much time is left when you procrastinate to the point of urgency.

The larger the period between when you feel enough urgency to act and the completion date and time of that task the more you want it.

The Art Of Adaptation:  Knowing how bad you want to succeed will help you do just that.

You ran in this weather?!

Yes I did. We should all run in bad weather. Or more generically, we should all (Insert verb) in/while (Insert adverse condition).

Why? For two reasons:

  • It allows you to say YES! If you plan on doing something but decide against it, ask yourself, why? When you say no, there is often a reason and if that reason is an excuse you should say yes.We say no and make excuses because there are obstacles we are to lazy or afraid to overcome. These include weather, temperature, money and fear. Obstacles are supposed to prevent you from succeeding. They aren’t supposed to prevent you from trying.  Obstacles are interchangeable and if you can say yes to overcoming one you can say it to the next one.
  • It gives you perspective. I see fair weather runners all the time. They are never happy running. They hate it even when conditions are perfect. I run in bad weather because it allows me to appreciate the days where conditions are perfect. We can’t always have perfect conditions and if we only practice or perform during these times those people who are willing to overcome obstacles will quickly surpass you.

The Art Of Adaptation: If used properly obstacles can make for the perfect conditions.

Estrangement

Unusual behavior often creates an estrangement in people around you.  Their feelings then further this odd behavior and so the estrangement continues in cycles until some sort of event occurs.  If the event is undesirable then someone has to give before it happens. The person behaving unusually has to stop or the person feeling estranged has to forgive, discuss and engage.

The Art Of Adaptation: Cycles can be broken.

Digital Generosity

Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and other social networks are being abused.
The main purpose behind them is to assist in developing or maintaining relationships and communication.

Many people and companies, more so, are using them as a one-way mass communication blast promoting products and asking you to buy.

Contrary to what these people think social media platforms reward what could be called digital generosity. When you contribute something of value like a blog post, comment or advice to a question posted in a forum, you help build a digital space where people want to listen to you.

In order to successful and gain any monetary, marketing or sales value from social media you need to be a giver… Not a taker.

The Art Of Adaptation: Always add more value than you take.

Change Takes Time (QP)

September 19, 2012 — Leave a comment

Adapting and changing a habit or behavior takes time. How much time? It’s all depends but it doesn’t matter if we aren’t using ever minute every second to our advantage.

Here are 5 places, times or events where we can be more efficient with our time and a (suggestion) to try:

- Sitting for breakfast (read the paper)

- Riding public transit (Write a blog post via iPhone… Like this one)

- Walking (Listen to an audio book)

- Waiting in line (chat up a stranger)

- Day dreaming (meditate)

What do you do to make the most of your time?

The Art Of Adaptation: Change takes time. Make the most of it.
