The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 4,600 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 8 years to get that many views.

Not Doing, Is Doing.

October 30, 2012 — 1 Comment

Not writing a blog post for a while is sometimes a good thing. No marketers or people coaching about successful platforms would suggest this if you are trying to make a living off your blog but I think it’s important to take short breaks for a little while.

Reasons why you should take a short break (now and then):

1) It may give you a new perspective. Ever journal then look back it? Ever watch a movie, then re-watch it years later? Ever hear a song and think/feel one thing then a short while later feel nothing, or something totally different. With experience our perspectives change. It doesn’t necessarily equate to something good or bad but just different. As a blogger this may just be what you need to re-energize yourself to get back into writing or the turning point in your writing style your readers were waiting for. Take a chance and take a break!

2) Sometimes two much “writing” and not enough “doing” makes bloggers really boring. In one sense you have a scale, on one side of the scale is exciting content, this content is dense and in my opinion carries more weight so you need less to impress. This content is also hard to come by especially if it doesn’t come across as authentic. One sure fire way to make content more exciting and authentic is write about exciting things you are actually “doing” in life, like traveling, coaching, training, speaking, volunteering, creating.

On the other end of the scale there is more informative content which is emotionally less dramatic. It’s interesting but it doesn’t make you feel like you wish you took a speed reading course so you could burn though the material more quickly. People who write a lot and in a more informative fashion do it regularly and it’s thought material. They have conjured these ideas up in their mind or contemplated these ideas some how.

Most bloggers are somewhere in-between these two extremes and neither is right or wrong. I just think it helps to keep material fresh if you swing from one side to the other now and then. Surprise the reader, make them wonder what you’re up to now or where you’ll be next. The followers you really want, the tribe you want to build, will not just be interested in the words you type but the life you live.

That is where I’ve been for the last 30 days. I’ve been trying to find a new voice. I’ve been doing a little decision making, making some changes in my routien and trying to figure out what to give my readers that will add value and make them want to come back.

Keep reading I think you’ll like what’s coming!

I want to know, how you keep things fresh? When you get in a bit of a writing rut, how do you get out?
