We transition into new roles all the time. Some of the more common ones are transitions in school, from high school to university, to work, from university to a job. Then from jobs into a career.

Along the way we transition tens if not hundreds of times. Not always in major ways but in ways significant enough that at times we can fall into holes.

One of those holes is sticking to with what has worked. You’ve developed habits which have made you successful in one situation and have allowed you to transition smoothly into another.

What we fail to do is realize that only someone of those skills and habits are required in our new role and that we need a to add more and sometimes many more skills to our arsenal to reach the same level of success.

The trick is to celebrate your success and move on. Quickly find what the difference is between your previous role and your current one then create a plan to learn the skills which you will need to be successful.

The Art Of Adaptation: Realize that your roles are changing and that you must constantly adapt.

At times in sports and life I have found myself in what I call, and many others refer to as, a “hole.” It’s a place I put myself into for the most part. It’s where nothing goes right and everything goes wrong. For some strange reason I believe that the same logic that got me there will get me out.

I don’t believe in staying out of holes. Risk takers and difference makers are going to jump in them from time to time. The art is in getting in and out of them quickly. Here is how I do it:
